Physical environment

The way in which citizens, businesses and public authorities behave can have an impact on our physical surroundings. Environmental planning law regulates and safeguards our physical surroundings, and sets standards for and restrictions on any activity that can affect them. Consider the impact of industry on air quality and the protection of nature reserves. Explicit attention is required for specific issues relating to environmental plans and complex issues pertaining to nature conservation, such as those relating to nitrogen, desiccation and substances of very high concern (SVHC).

Environmental planning law

The introduction of the Environment and Planning Act [Omgevingswet] on 1 January 2024 marks the beginning of a new era of environmental planning. It has implications for the provinces, municipalities and water boards. The new legislation requires that all concerned adopt a different approach to work and introduces new issues in the field of environmental planning law. This demands expertise in the field of transitional law, procedures relating to environmental plans and all conceivable operational permits.

Nature conservation and environmental protection

An assessment against environmental protection and nature conservation law plays a crucial role in every building project, the construction of infrastructure or the development of industrial sites. This applies to the feasibility of the project in the first instance, and then to its planning and financial aspects. A profound knowledge of environmental protection and nature conservation law is required in order to minimise the risk of prejudice before an administrative court.

Dirkzwager combines extensive expertise with a deep commitment to environmental and nature-related issues. Our multidisciplinary team specialises in development projects, licensing and permitting procedures, and enforcement issues relating to environmental law and liability, and nature conservation.
